Purpose
To bring together all groups and individuals working on hate crimes and connected issues in Hamilton and area to share information, respond to hate crimes, support each other and coordinate our activities.
Goals
- To create a place to share information about activities that our groups or agencies are working on, or are already connected into.
- To quickly distribute information in cases of significant hate crimes to allow individual groups to organize their response.
- To provide support, resources and information to each other.
- To create opportunities for education.
- To be a resource to the Hamilton Police Service to help them reach out to diverse communities on issues of hate crime.
- To coordinate activities amongst each other (i.e. dates of events) to encourage participation.
- To build strong, mutually beneficial relationships and develop allies.
- To work together to plan shared/joint activities.
Membership
Membership is open to all who are involved with hate crimes, anti-racism and anti-violence initiatives. The focus will be on hate crimes specifically, with an understanding that there are many ways in which other issues are tied in. There is certainly a wide range of overlap within those activities, and the goal is not to replace any group or activity but to enhance them.
Administration:
The Network is co-administered by volunteers, currently Cat Cayuga and Tanya Gulliver. The Network members communicate through a mailing list created for discussion and information exchange.
