What is a Hate Crime?
The Hamilton Police Service uses the following definition:
"A criminal occurrence committed against a person or property which is motivated solely, or in part, by the suspect's hate, bias or prejudice based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation or any similar factor."
The types of actual crimes vary but could include: graffiti, physical or sexual assault, harassment, hate propaganda, etc.

- Immigrants & Refugees
- Visible Minorities
- Religious Communities
- Aboriginal People
- Gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgendered & transexual people
- Women
- People with disabilities
Either individuals or groups of people could be targeted
